Keyboard lag is the gap between pressing a key and the character appearing. Small delays feel like a sluggish computer; larger ones make typing impossible. The cause is either the keyboard’s connection, a setting that deliberately delays keystrokes, or a computer too busy to draw the character. Use the tester above: if the key lights up instantly there but text appears late in your app, the app or the system is the bottleneck, not the keyboard.
Settings that add delay
Filter Keys (Windows) and Slow Keys (Mac)
These accessibility settings wait before accepting a keystroke. They are the first thing to check, because they are enabled by holding the right Shift for eight seconds, which happens by accident.
- Windows: Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → Filter Keys off.
- Mac: System Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → Slow Keys off.
Repeat delay
A long repeat delay does not slow the first character, but it can make held keys feel unresponsive. Win+R → control keyboard on Windows, or System Settings → Keyboard on a Mac.
Power saving
Windows can put USB devices to sleep. In Device Manager, open each USB Root Hub → Properties → Power Management, and untick Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Also set the power plan to Balanced or High performance under Settings → System → Power.
Wireless problems
Battery
Low batteries cause lag before they cause disconnection. Charge or replace them first.
Interference
2.4 GHz wireless and Bluetooth share the band with Wi-Fi, microwaves and, most of all, USB 3 devices. External SSDs, hubs and some monitors radiate noise that swamps a receiver plugged in next to them.
- Move the USB receiver to a port on the other side of the computer, or use a short USB extension cable to bring it onto the desk.
- Keep USB 3 drives and hubs away from the receiver.
- Keep the keyboard within two meters with a clear line of sight.
Bluetooth
- Remove and re-pair the keyboard (Windows: Settings → Bluetooth & devices; Mac: System Settings → Bluetooth).
- Turn off Bluetooth on nearby devices you are not using.
- On Windows, update the Bluetooth driver from the laptop maker or Intel, not just Windows Update.
- If the keyboard offers a 2.4 GHz dongle mode, use it; it is lower latency than Bluetooth.
Wired problems
- Plug directly into the computer, not a hub, dock or monitor.
- Try a USB 2 port; some USB 3 controllers poll input devices erratically under load.
- Swap the cable if it is detachable.
The computer is busy
If everything lags, including the mouse, the keyboard is fine and the system is overloaded.
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) or Activity Monitor and sort by CPU. Close or end anything using a large share.
- Check memory. A machine that is swapping to disk lags at everything.
- Pause cloud sync, antivirus scans and updates while you test.
- Restart. It clears runaway processes and leaked memory.
Lag in games
Input lag in games is usually rendering delay rather than keyboard delay.
- Cap the frame rate slightly below the monitor’s refresh rate and disable V-Sync, or enable the GPU driver’s low latency mode (NVIDIA Reflex or Ultra Low Latency, AMD Anti-Lag).
- Turn on Game Mode in Windows: Settings → Gaming → Game Mode.
- Use full-screen rather than borderless windowed mode in older games.
- Close overlays (Discord, Steam, GeForce Experience) while testing.
Lag in one app
Word, Outlook and browsers can lag on their own when an add-in or extension processes every keystroke.
- Browsers: try an incognito window; if lag disappears, disable extensions one at a time. Grammar checkers and password managers are common causes.
- Office: start in safe mode (hold Ctrl while opening Word) and disable add-ins under File → Options → Add-ins.
- Remote desktop: the delay is network latency; nothing on the keyboard will fix it.
Firmware and drivers
Update the keyboard’s firmware through the vendor app, and reinstall the keyboard driver in Device Manager if the lag began after a Windows update.
Measure the lag
The tester above registers keystrokes the moment the browser receives them. Type a burst of letters and watch: if the tester lights keys instantly but a document elsewhere shows them late, the delay is in that app or in the system’s rendering, not in the keyboard’s connection. If even the tester lags, the delay is before the browser: the keyboard, its connection or the operating system.
For wireless keyboards, a quick A/B test settles it. Plug in any wired keyboard. If the wired one is instant and the wireless one lags, the problem is the radio link, so work through battery, receiver placement and interference.
Windows settings that quietly slow input
- Filter Keys with any delay set.
- USB selective suspend under Power Options → Advanced settings → USB settings. Set it to Disabled on a desktop.
- Bluetooth power saving on the Bluetooth adapter in Device Manager → Properties → Power Management.
- Pointer precision and keyboard properties do not cause lag, but a very long repeat delay makes held keys feel slow.
- Background apps with keyboard hooks: clipboard managers, macro tools, some antivirus keystroke protection and older versions of remote desktop tools inspect every keystroke and can add tens of milliseconds each.
macOS settings
Slow Keys is the only setting that deliberately delays keys. Otherwise look at Bluetooth: a Mac with several Bluetooth devices and Wi-Fi on the 2.4 GHz band can lag a Bluetooth keyboard, and moving Wi-Fi to 5 GHz often fixes it.
Troubleshooting flow
- Tester responds instantly: the keyboard is fine, look at the app or system.
- Filter Keys or Slow Keys off.
- USB power saving off.
- Wireless: battery, move the receiver, re-pair, prefer the dongle over Bluetooth.
- Wired: direct port, USB 2, another cable.
- Check CPU and memory; restart.
- Games: frame cap, low latency mode, Game Mode.
- One app: incognito or safe mode, remove add-ins.
- Firmware and driver updates.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my Bluetooth keyboard lag? +
Low battery, distance, or interference from USB 3 devices and Wi-Fi on the 2.4 GHz band. Charge it, move closer, and keep USB 3 drives and hubs away from the receiver or the computer's Bluetooth antenna.
Does Filter Keys cause keyboard lag? +
Yes. Filter Keys waits before accepting a keystroke, which feels exactly like lag. Turn it off under Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard.
Why does my keyboard lag only in games? +
The game is running at a low frame rate or with a large render queue, so input is processed late. Lower graphics settings, cap the frame rate, and disable V-Sync or enable low latency mode in the GPU driver.
Can a USB hub cause typing delay? +
Yes, particularly unpowered hubs and hubs shared with a webcam or drive. Plug the keyboard or its receiver directly into the computer.
Is wired always faster than wireless? +
Wired has no interference and no battery, so it is the safest choice for zero lag. Modern 2.4 GHz wireless keyboards are close to wired when the receiver is placed well; Bluetooth is the most likely to lag.
