Most keyboards have two Enter keys: the main one above the right Shift, and one on the numeric keypad. If one fails and the other works, that alone tells you it is hardware or a remap rather than a system problem. Start with the tester, then follow the fixes in order.
Test both Enter keys
Press the main Enter and the numpad Enter in the tester above.

Fix 1: The app, not the key
Enter does different things in different places, and some apps deliberately change it:
- Chat apps (Teams, Slack, Discord, WhatsApp desktop) can be set so Enter inserts a new line and Ctrl+Enter or Shift+Enter sends. Check the app’s settings.
- Web forms often need a button click; Enter only submits from certain fields.
- Excel moves down a cell rather than inserting a line; use Alt+Enter for a line break inside a cell.
- Terminal and code editors may have Enter bound to a different action by an extension.
Test in Notepad or TextEdit. If Enter makes a new line there, the key is fine.
Fix 2: Filter Keys and Slow Keys
Enter is usually tapped quickly, and these settings drop quick taps.
- Windows: Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → Filter Keys off.
- Mac: System Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → Slow Keys off.
Fix 3: Mouse Keys
If only the numpad Enter fails, Mouse Keys may be on. It turns the numpad into a mouse controller. Windows: Settings → Accessibility → Mouse → Mouse Keys off. Mac: System Settings → Accessibility → Pointer Control → Mouse Keys off.
Fix 4: Remaps and vendor software
Check PowerToys Keyboard Manager, Karabiner-Elements, AutoHotkey scripts and gaming keyboard profiles for anything assigned to Enter. Some game profiles disable Enter to stop accidental chat.
Fix 5: Driver (Windows)
Device Manager → Keyboards → right-click → Uninstall device → restart. If Enter broke right after an update, use Roll Back Driver instead.
Fix 6: Remap around a dead key

Hardware
The main Enter key is wide and, on many keyboards, uses a stabilizer like the spacebar.
- Debris. Power off, blow compressed air around the key from several angles, tilt and tap.
- Stabilizer. If the key only works when pressed in one spot, the stabilizer under it is unclipped or dirty. On a desktop keyboard, pull the keycap evenly from both sides, clean the housings, reseat the wire and press the cap back on. On laptops, lift from the top edge only if you know your model.
- Worn switch. A key that needs a hard press has a failing contact. Replace the switch on a hot-swap mechanical keyboard; otherwise replace the keyboard.
- Liquid. Dry for 48 hours before testing; clean sugar residue with isopropyl alcohol.
Enter behaves differently in each app
Before assuming a fault, check what Enter is supposed to do where you are typing.

If Enter does what the table says, nothing is wrong. If it does something else, the app has a setting or an add-in changing it.
Numpad Enter versus main Enter
Windows treats the two Enter keys as different scan codes. A few older programs and games bind only one of them, so a “broken” Enter in one game may simply be the other key. Remapping tools can make the numpad Enter identical to the main one if you rely on it. Macs label the main key Return and the numpad key Enter, and a handful of Mac apps, notably some spreadsheets and terminals, treat Enter as “confirm without moving”.
Troubleshooting flow
- Test both Enter keys in the tester.
- Test in Notepad or TextEdit; check the app’s Enter setting.
- Filter Keys or Slow Keys off.
- Mouse Keys off if the numpad Enter fails.
- Remove remaps; reinstall the driver.
- Clean; reseat the stabilizer.
- Remap Caps Lock or right Ctrl to Enter, or replace.
