The spacebar is the biggest key, the most used, and the one with the most moving parts underneath. When it fails, the cause is usually mechanical rather than electrical, but a handful of software settings and browser extensions can make a perfectly good spacebar seem dead. Check the software first because it takes a minute.
Test it
Press the spacebar at the left end, the middle and the right end in the tester above.
- Registers everywhere: the key works. An app or setting is the problem.
- Registers only in the middle: the stabilizer is the problem.
- Registers intermittently: debris or a worn switch.
- Never registers: the switch, the membrane, or a remap.
Software fixes
1. Click into a text field
Space scrolls a web page when no text box has focus. Click where you want to type and try again.
2. Filter Keys or Slow Keys
These ignore fast taps, and Space is the key you tap fastest.
- Windows: Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → Filter Keys off.
- Mac: System Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → Slow Keys off.
3. Browser extensions
If Space fails only in the browser, open an incognito or private window, where extensions are disabled. If it works there, disable extensions one at a time. Video and reader extensions that bind Space to play or pause are the usual cause.
4. Apps that capture Space
Games use Space to jump and may hold it after you tab out; media players use it to pause. Test in Notepad or TextEdit.
5. Remaps and macros
Check PowerToys Keyboard Manager, Karabiner-Elements, AutoHotkey and keyboard vendor software for rules involving Space.
6. Driver (Windows)
Device Manager → Keyboards → Uninstall device → restart.
Hardware fixes
7. Debris
Power off. Blow compressed air along the length of the bar from both sides, tilt the keyboard and tap it, and press the bar firmly 30 times. Long hairs and crumbs collect under the spacebar more than any other key.
8. The stabilizer
A spacebar has a switch in the middle and a wire or plastic stabilizer that keeps the ends level. If the ends feel mushy or only the middle works, the stabilizer has come unclipped or is gummed up.
Desktop mechanical or membrane keyboard:
- Pull the keycap straight up, pulling from both ends evenly. Note how the wire hooks into the cap.
- Clean the stabilizer housings with a dry brush and air.
- Check the wire is seated in both housings and both clips on the underside of the cap.
- Press the cap back on, wire first, then the center stem.
Laptop: the spacebar uses a long wire bar under the cap. It can be lifted from the top edge, but re-hooking the wire is fiddly. If you are not confident, air and pressure are the safe options, and a repair shop can replace the cap.
9. Worn switch or dome
If Space registers only with a hard press, the contact under it is worn. Mechanical keyboards with hot-swap sockets take a new switch in seconds. Membrane and laptop keyboards need replacement.
10. Liquid
Space is where drinks land. Power off, invert, dry for 48 hours. Sticky residue under the bar makes it slow to return and can be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol on a desktop keyboard.
Work around it

- External keyboard for laptops.
- On-screen keyboard: Win+Ctrl+O.
- Copy a space: if you only need one for a form field, copy any character with a space from a page like Copy and paste symbols and delete the symbol.
Spacebar on specific keyboards
- Membrane desktop keyboards use a plastic bar that hooks into two clips under the cap. If the bar has popped out of one clip, the far end of the key feels loose and does nothing. Pull the cap, hook the bar back into both clips, and press down until it snaps.
- Mechanical keyboards use either plate-mounted or PCB-mounted stabilizers. Plate-mount ones can be pulled up with the keycap; PCB-mount ones are screwed or clipped to the board. Lubricating the stabilizer wire is a common fix for a rattly or sticky spacebar.
- Laptops use a metal wire under the cap that hooks into two small plastic guides. When the cap is reseated, the wire must go in first. A spacebar that sits crooked after cleaning has the wire out of one guide.
- Apple keyboards with the butterfly mechanism (2015 to 2019 MacBooks) are notorious for a dead or repeating spacebar caused by a single crumb. Apple ran a repair program for these; compressed air held at 75 degrees while the keyboard is upright is the official cleaning method.
- Low-profile keyboards often have shorter travel and are more sensitive to dust; a light press that used to register may need a firmer one once debris builds up.
Space in text you cannot edit
If you need a space in a username or a field that strips it, the answer is not the spacebar but a different character. Non-breaking space (U+00A0) and the invisible characters on the invisible character page are accepted where a normal space is not.
