About Arabic letters

Arabic is written right to left with 28 letters whose shape changes depending on position in the word. Unicode stores the base letter; the font draws the joined form automatically.

The Arabic (101) layout on Windows and the Arabic layout on macOS follow the standard Arabic typewriter arrangement, which is not phonetic. Short vowels (harakat) are typed with Shift plus the number keys on Windows.

Arabic-Indic digits (٠١٢٣) are separate characters from Western digits.

How to switch your keyboard to Arabic

Windows

Open Settings → Time & Language → Language & region, add Arabic (or open the options for your language and add the Arabic (101) keyboard). Switch layouts with Win+Space. The current layout is shown next to the clock.

Mac

Open System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → Edit, click +, and add Arabic or Arabic - PC. Switch with Control+Space or from the input menu in the menu bar. Turn on Show Input menu in menu bar to see which layout is active.

iPhone and iPad

Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard and choose Arabic. Switch by holding the globe key on the keyboard.

Android

In Gboard, open Settings → Languages → Add keyboard and choose Arabic. Switch by holding the space bar or tapping the globe key.
