About Japanese (Kana) letters

Japanese mixes hiragana (the first grid), katakana (the second) and kanji. Kana are typed by romaji: ka gives か, and the space bar converts to kanji.

Every OS ships a Japanese IME: Microsoft IME, macOS Japanese - Romaji, and the Japanese Romaji or Kana keyboards on phones.

Dakuten ゛ and handakuten ゜ modify consonants (か → が, は → ぱ); Unicode has precomposed forms for all of them.

How to switch your keyboard to Japanese (Kana)

Windows

Open Settings → Time & Language → Language & region, add Japanese (Kana) (or open the options for your language and add the Japanese (Microsoft IME) keyboard). Switch layouts with Win+Space. The current layout is shown next to the clock.

Mac

Open System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → Edit, click +, and add Japanese - Romaji. Switch with Control+Space or from the input menu in the menu bar. Turn on Show Input menu in menu bar to see which layout is active.

iPhone and iPad

Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard and choose Japanese - Romaji or Kana. Switch by holding the globe key on the keyboard.

Android

In Gboard, open Settings → Languages → Add keyboard and choose Japanese (Gboard). Switch by holding the space bar or tapping the globe key.
