About Latvian letters

Latvian marks long vowels with the macron (ā, ē, ī, ū), softens consonants with a cedilla (ģ, ķ, ļ, ņ) and uses the caron on č, š, ž.

The Latvian (Standard) layout types them with Alt Gr plus the base letter, or with the apostrophe as a dead key on the QWERTY variant.

On a Mac, ABC Extended gives the macron with Option+A then the vowel.

How to switch your keyboard to Latvian

Windows

Open Settings → Time & Language → Language & region, add Latvian (or open the options for your language and add the Latvian (Standard) keyboard). Switch layouts with Win+Space. The current layout is shown next to the clock.

Mac

Open System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → Edit, click +, and add Latvian. Switch with Control+Space or from the input menu in the menu bar. Turn on Show Input menu in menu bar to see which layout is active.

iPhone and iPad

Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard and choose Latvian. Switch by holding the globe key on the keyboard.

Android

In Gboard, open Settings → Languages → Add keyboard and choose Latvian. Switch by holding the space bar or tapping the globe key.
