About Māori letters

Māori marks long vowels with the tohutō (macron) on ā, ē, ī, ō, ū.

Windows has a Māori layout that types macrons with the ` key as a dead key; macOS has a Māori layout with Option plus the vowel.

Macron vowels have no Alt codes; in Word type 0101 then Alt+X for ā.

How to switch your keyboard to Māori

Windows

Open Settings → Time & Language → Language & region, add Māori (or open the options for your language and add the Māori keyboard). Switch layouts with Win+Space. The current layout is shown next to the clock.

Mac

Open System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → Edit, click +, and add Māori. Switch with Control+Space or from the input menu in the menu bar. Turn on Show Input menu in menu bar to see which layout is active.

iPhone and iPad

Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard and choose Māori. Switch by holding the globe key on the keyboard.

Android

In Gboard, open Settings → Languages → Add keyboard and choose Māori. Switch by holding the space bar or tapping the globe key.
